Distinguish between Volatile and Non-Volatile Memory in Computer
In computer, memory refers to the physical devices used to store programs (sequence of instructions) or data on a temporary or permanent basis for use in a computer or other digital / computing devices. Memory in a digital computer contains the main part of operating system and all the application programs and related data that is being used.
Table of Contents
Types of Memory on the basis of Retention Power
- Volatile Memory
- Non-Volatile Memory
Definition of Volatile Memory
Volatile memory requires power to retain data and is primarily used for temporary storage. it retains the data / information as long as power supply is on, but when power supply is off or interrupted the stored data / information is lost.
Example
Examples of such memory are RAM (Random Access Memory), Cache memory and Registers.
Definition of Non-Volatile Memory
Non-volatile memory retains data even when power is off, making it suitable for permanent storage.
Example
Examples of such memory include ROM (Read Only Memory), which stores essential boot-up instructions, Flash memory used in USB drives, and HDDs for storing programs, videos, documents.
Distinguish between Volatile and Non-Volatile Memory
The Key differences or comparison between Impact and Non-Impact printers are as follow on the basis of speed, quality, cost and its usage
| Volatile Memory | Non-Volatile Memory |
| Data is lost when power turned off. | Retains data even when the power is off. |
| Data temporarily stored. | Data permanently stored. |
| It is faster than non-volatile memory | It is slower than volatile memory |
| It has less storage capacity | It has large storage capacity than volatile memory |
| Example: RAM (Random access memory), Cache Memory, Register. | Example: ROM (Random Only memory), HDDs, USB Drives, Optical Discs. |
